Choreo Classes -What are they all about?

Seen 'Choreo' on the timetable and immediately discounted it? Or have you been intrigued for a while but haven't found the courage to try out a class yet? Maybe you're thinking 'I can't dance, that's not the class for me'?
Those that know me will know I am a lover of all things flow, so lets take a deep dive into our choreo classes here at KPole and get our heads wrapped around it together. If I can convince just one more person to try a choreography class then my work here is done!

What are the types of choreography classes you offer?
So, there are two types of choreography class you'll find on the KPole timetable. Pole Choreo and Heels Choreo.
Let's dive into our heels classes first of all. These popular classes are specifically dedicated to the art of dancing in pole specific heels (often called pleasers). Learning to dance and move around the pole in pole heels is extremely technical and the approach you take to your movement will be completely different to dancing barefoot.
In these classes you'll take time getting to grips with your pole heels and talk all things technique with your instructor. You'll learn how to use your weight distribution to make movement look effortless and there will be some ankle conditioning exercises thrown in for good measure!
On top of that, these classes are where you get to explore the more sensual and firey side of movement. Depending on the song you are working with that month, you may be looking at slowing movement right down using your body to connect with your audience, or it may be more hard style routine, where you get to be a complete badass and completely bring out your inner sass!
Our Pole Choreo classes are a little bit more varied. In these sessions your instructor will work through a bigger range of flow and choreography styles with you. As with the heels choreography classes, the routine are usually learned over about a month (4-5 sessions), but our regular choreo sessions have much less focus on the technique of using heels and how to move around the pole in them. You are welcome to wear heels in these sessions, and lots of our students choose to do so, but the routines you will learn will not be specifically choreographed for pole heels.
What you will focus on in pole choreo is pole technique. You'll learn lots of brand new movements that are completely different to what you're used to in your pole fitness sessions. These will usually be basework (meaning you wont be climbing the pole) and there will also be things like floorwork thrown in, depending on what your instructor has put into the routine. As in the heels choreo sessions, you'll be working on making these movement patterns look effortless by understanding the distribution of weight and different, unique grip points.

Some FAQ's about Choreo and Heels classes
Do I need to be able to dance?
Absolutely not. Just like asking 'do I need upper body strength?' when starting pole classes, the answer is the same here, the whole point of coming to choreo and heels classes is to learn to dance and discover your own movement style. Our instructors will teach you the routines, but how you interpret the movement and musicality of the piece is for you to explore and work on! What I always like to say to my students is that because you are learning choreography that someone else has come up with, it will always look a bit robotic until the movements are cemented in your brain and you are not thinking about what comes next. Then you can start to put your spin on it and create your version of the flow and it will all look a lot more 'flowy'.
Do I need heels?
As mentioned above, heels are not compulsory, especially in our pole choreo classes. For our heels choreography classes, it is recommended that you have heels - as the flow and techniques you will be working on are specifically designed for heels work. These must be pole specific heels (if you're not sure what that means then drop us a message!)
Can I do these on top of my regular pole fitness classes?
100%! We have some students that absolutely love choreography and after starting these classes they opt to only do this style of pole, but you can absolutely switch it up between pole fitness and pole choreo. If anything, its such a good way to cross train and add more to your pole repertoire, as you will learn so many new ways to move, different grips and techniques. I also personally think that choreography classes are one of the best ways to become more body aware. You really get to know the way you move and this can be so beneficial for the rest of your pole training.
You can try out a pole choreo or heels class at any point, but the only thing we ask is that you have completed at least 6 regular pole classes beforehand, as in both of these types of classes, you will be expected to know basic pole grips and have a very basic knowledge of pole movement. Again, if you're unsure just drop us a message and ask some questions!
